  1. Can I get pregnant during my period?

The probabilities of getting pregnant while on your period are low, but the possibilities are there. Therefore, you are advised to use contraceptive devices like condom to be protected from unwanted pregnancy and STIs.

  1. Why do I bleed on my active pill days?

It is normal to bleed during active pill days but it should not be confused with menstrual bleeding. Sometimes if you miss or are late in the last week of active pills, it can bring on your period early and sometimes it just happens for no apparent reason.

  1. Are sanitary pads/ tampons the only option?

Other than the very common sanitary pads and tampons, there are a lot of other alternatives available in the market. Other alternatives can be menstrual cups, period panties and reusable cloth pads. They have their individual advantages and disadvantages. Each person decides for themselves what works best.

  1. Is it normal to pass clots and clumps along with menstrual bleeding?

Unlike bleeding caused due to a cut or injury, menstrual blood is slightly dark in color. Also, the blood is mixed with the mucous secretion and cells shedding from the endometrial lining that gives it a lumpy or clot appearance.

  1. Why is my period late?

Missed or late periods happen for many reasons other than pregnancy. Common causes can range from hormonal imbalances to serious medical conditions. There are also two times in a woman’s life when it’s totally normal for her period to be irregular: when it first begins, and when menopause starts.

  1. Can I have sex during menstruation?

Yes, you can. However, it can become messy. Moreover, HIV and a few other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may be passed on more easily during a woman’s period (both from the woman to the man and vice versa). To avoid this, you should always use a condom when you have sex.

  1. What can I do about the pain I feel during my periods?

When you’ve got your period and experience pain/discomfort, sometimes the best thing you can do is to take a bath, put on some sweats and relax. To lessen the pain, you can try over-the-counter pain relievers, herbal tea, meditation or placing a hot water bottle on your belly. You might also want to stay away from greasy or spicy foods.

  1. Is menstrual hygiene important?

You should follow hygienic practices during menstruation. Not doing so can result in you getting fungal infections. Repeated infections lead to serious reproductive tract infections and can cause infertility in the long term.

During the menstrual cycle, various hormones cause changes in breast tissue that can lead to pain or discomfort in some women. While breasts do not typically hurt, occasional breast pain is common.

  1. What are menstrual cramps?

Having menstrual cramps is one of the most common, annoying parts of your period. They can strike right before or during that time of the month. Many women get them routinely. When cramps are severe, symptoms may include upset stomach, sometimes with vomiting and loose stools.
